Antique maps provide amusement and wonder. Even older maps can show us information about a world that no longer exists. A modern globe will not show Indochina. It will show the countries of Laos, Cambodia and Vietnam instead. These countries were once French territory, but that is now in the distant past. Old maps, particularly those connected to a certain era or a particular ship can tell investigators what might have happened to a ship.

If a person had the charts used by th Edmund Fitzgerald, for example, they would find out if the captain had a ship that did not mark certain features of Lake Superior. A person who finds a map for a hypothetical lost explorer may find out what happened to the explorer if he can find a modern map to compare it with.

Antique maps can do more than just solve old mysteries. An old map or a map styled to look like it came from the renaissance can provide a nice looking decoration to a room. The owner can frame the map, hang it up, or simply display it as is. If the map is particularly old, he may want to protect it in any way he can.

Finding old homes and barns along rustic country roads are common, a group of old buildings in the middle of nowhere raises the question of why. It’s apparent they are not farm homes, outbuildings or barns, as their large and low structures suggest they were used for commercial purposes. The surrounding countryside is dotted with the occasional family farm, and travel is on a gravel road barely wide enough for two cars to pass by each other. When were these buildings built, and why here in the middle of nowhere? What would be the most productive way to approach this mystery?

Antique maps are a valuable research tool in finding answers which may not be obvious in our present time. The old rustic road may have been the only road or horse and buggy lane through the area, long before the county highways and interstates were built. Those buildings may have been the center of the surrounding communities, providing a place to buy food, supplies, see a doctor, or selling your agricultural products. There may have been a church, school, railroad line, even a hotel. It was likely this community featured social events like dances and community picnics as well. Some of the mysteries of today can easily be solved studying maps of the past.

These days, many people look to the past when it comes to decor for their homes. Anyone can drive to a big box store to buy decorations and accessories for their home. It takes time and skill to find antiques for the home, but it is worth it because they are unique, and often, one of a kind. Searching for antique maps to use as artwork is both fun and very rewarding.

There are many places where one can locate collectible antique maps. One great place to look is at a swap meet. Swap meets and swap marts always have quirky and hard to find items. Because there are so many vendors, it is a good possibility that someone might be selling old maps for a decent price.

Another good spot to look is at yard sales. People often hold these sales when they have stuff to get rid of. They price items at rock bottom prices in order to just simply get rid of it. That is why shopping at these sales is always a good idea.

There are many places to find collectible antique maps a decent prices, as long as one is willing to do a bit of shopping around.

Antique maps do not change. If they did change, they would no longer be an antique map. If someone asks a collector how antique maps have changed in recent years, this will be the most likely response. The person who asks this question is not wondering how the maps themselves have changed, but how the market for them has changed.

The antique map market may not be as exciting as some of the other antique markets. A ’57 Chevy may go for a lot more at auction, but the ’57 Chevy requires much more maintenance than an old map. The pleasure it brings may be more thrilling, but the pleasure of an antique map will last for years to come.

The truth is that the market does not change much over time. The prices for certain maps may go up or down. Most people do not expect an antique map to do anything except get older. People expect that the map will go up in value if it gets older, although there are a number of factors that affect this. The individual needs to know the rarity of the map and its specific history. Learning the history of a specific antique map is not as easy as it might seem.

Looking to history and the past can be helpful in many of life’s situations. Having the past to turn to is beneficial for numerous reasons. By looking at the past, we as humans can see our modern world in a new or improved light. Many people say that one cannot change the present without being aware of the past. Because of this, historic old maps are more important than ever before.

Old maps are so useful because they provide insight into an earlier time. Maps change as a society changes. These old maps reflect history and how it has evolved over a certain amount of time. By looking at old maps, people can see what has change. Then, they can begin to speculate as to why these changes occurred. Maps can help a variety of people in different professions.

Teachers or professors know that historic maps are useful in showing students how geography changes throughout history over time. There are many lessons where teachers can use old maps in class. Students can look at and study old maps in order to analyze history like true historians. Old maps are important for so many reasons, and education os just one of them.
